Limits Discord enforces

A title up to 256 characters, a description up to 4,096, up to 25 fields with names up to 256 and values up to 1,024, a footer up to 2,048, and 6,000 characters across the whole embed. Go over and Discord refuses the message with "Invalid Form Body" (error 50035). The builder counts for you.

Images in the preview are shown as their address only: they load from the address you give when the bot sends the embed. The full guides: embeds in discord.py and embeds in discord.js.
